Actually, I think this is a good idea.
A few years ago when I played more video games, I used to play one called Age of Empires II. I'd sometimes visit online communities for the game, and found that many of the players were not only interested in the history that was represented in the game, but also that they were prompted to delve further into researching the areas that interested them. I don't see why the same couldn't happen with a game like this.
Plus, you know, it might be fun.
Also, I should be able to play as the Beothuk, kick some settler ass, and assuage my white Newfie guilt.
While I absolutely agree with the concept of making history more interactive/accessible, my REAL concern - as highlighted by Toby's comment - is that it forces Western/settler concepts of 'conflict' onto groups that didn't necessarily hold similar conceptions of them.
ALSO....TOBY, step up your Newfoundland'ness and remember that we blame the FRENCH for the Beothuk genocide. Just subscribe to the popular history of the island, trash the truth, and consider yourself guilt-free. Oh yeah...and don't forget the special fishing rights they had on the French shore. We can also blame them for that whole overfishing thing.
